As a charitable company limited by guarantee, ELAN is governed by a board of trustees who have overall responsibility and ultimate decision-making authority for all the work of the trust, delegating some matters to the local governing body through the scheme of delegation. The trustees will oversee the educational standards, performance and finances of all the academies in the trust and meet the government guidelines on safeguarding, equality and diversity.

The trustees are accountable to the Department for Education (DfE) and ensure the standard and quality of education remains high and that any associated academy funding is used effectively. The trustees will focus on the three core functions of governance:

• ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

• holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff

• overseeing and ensuring effective financial performance

ELAN are seeking a Trustee with a professional background in law/legal. General management skills such as negotiation, problem solving, and leadership, are also great additions.

Trustees must be able to confidently support and challenge the leadership of a group of schools. As Directors of the Trust, you will be legally accountable to provide effective and ethical governance.

Selection criteria

• To be eligible to volunteer, you need to be aged 18 or over and not disqualified under the relevant rules and procedures

• Experience in Information Technology/Digital Strategy across a large organisation, over a number of sites.

• An interest in the education sector.

Extend Learning Academies Network became a multi-academy trust on the 1st October 2017. We are based in North Somerset and we educate 2,700 children in nine primary schools. We work collaboratively and very closely, yet our schools retain their own identity and individuality. The primary purpose of our multi-academy trust is to deliver an extraordinary education to our pupils. Extend Learning Academies Network schools support a mixed demographic in both semi rural and urban settings across the county. This also includes an area of deprivation within the top 0.5% nationally.

Our schools are an established working group with a shared ethos and a history and culture of collaboration and collaborative development that has grown and evolved over the last 10+ years and continues to do so. This work has been key in the development of:

- Teaching and learning

- Subject specialism

- Curriculum principles

- Excellent classroom practice

- Outstanding practice for all pupils

- Enriched opportunities for learners

- Culture of support and challenge

- The sharing of best practice and resources

Our schools are all committed to taking full advantage of the opportunities that working in a collaborative multi academy trust presents, extending the capacity, sustainability and ability of the group to deliver an extraordinary education, experiences and outcomes for all young people.

I think I can bring something to ELAN. How do I express my interest?

We are actively looking for people with new ideas and a fresh perspective to join our board.

If you are interested in applying to be an ELAN trustee please complete a short expression of interest form.

Please note candidates should live within reasonable travelling distance of the trust so that they can attend meetings in person.
